Task Brief: "Present a case study on two companies - what are their strengths and weaknesses? Present relevant data to support your findings."
Using two companies' financial data, I made visualisations that highlighted key characteristics about their struggles or success, then presented my findings to an audience.

Commodore
Commodore was a computer manufacturer that ultimately went bankrupt in 1994.
While the company primarily struggled with qualitative issues surrounding a lack of consistent leadership (they went through four CEOs in five years!), a lot of their struggles could be seen numerically through data.
Over-reliant on 5-10 year old standout products to keep up revenue. Products released after these bestsellers didn't stand out enough - their sales were cannibalised by Commodore's own past products!
Notice how the aging Commodore 64 and Amiga 500 handily outsold their successors.
Struggling to grow during the 90s
Breakthrough came too little too late Commodore's "make of break" product came out in 1993, but the company struggled to put them on store shelves.
Sales didn't hold up throughout the year and profit fell through - bankrupting the company.
Abema
Abema is a Japanese Video-On-Demand (VOD) service formed between two major TV and digital advertisement groups. Their data reflects their consistent growth and proactive attempts to increase their brand awareness and appeal.
Initial struggle to find profit, but clear growth Abema struggled for several years after its founding. Despite this slow start, consistent growth in active users and revenue has started to turn a profit
Investing in brand awareness
Their growth can be attributed to their proactive investments to increase brand awareness. During late 2022, Abema experiences a huge spike in both operating costs and active viewers.
This is caused by their huge investment into acquiring the streaming rights for the FIFA 2022 Football World Cup - which Abema credits for a large increase in their brand awareness.
Summary and Thoughts
This project was a good opportunity to develop my exploratory data analysis (EDA) and presentation skills.
I was pleasantly surprised by how much of a company's story was reflected in their financial data.
Having only done EDA a few times before, this was good practice for finding interesting patterns and outliers in data, then combining my findings and research to answer "what does that data mean?".
